The Asia Foundation Hosts Welcoming Reception for New TAFKO Country Representative

The Asia Foundation hosted a welcoming reception for its new country representative for Korea, Kwang Kim on October 31 in Seoul. Representatives from the government and international organizations, business partners, media, and NGO managers attended the reception. Kwang Kim, in his remarks, emphasized the important role Korea plays in Asian development. He shared about assuming the new role with both humility and boldness. Humility, because of Asia Foundation’s distinguished history and accomplishments, and the responsibility to steward its legacy. Boldness, because of new opportunities and global trends to align Asia Foundation for a bright future. Kim Kihwan, Emeritus Chair, Seoul Financial Forum and board member of FOTAF, gave a toast in honor of Kwang Kim. 
 
Asia Foundation and Korea Development Institute Host Annual Author Workshop for Publication on Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding 

The Asia Foundation hosted the 8th annual author workshop of the Asian Approaches to Development Cooperation (AADC) dialogue series. Organized jointly with the Korea Development Institute, the AADC brings together development experts and government officials to address how Asian countries’ engagement in development and South-South cooperation is changing the global aid landscape and the development prospects for the region. From October 30 to 31, participants of the author workshop used the forum to discuss the upcoming AADC publication on conflict challenges in the region, “Conflict Prevention and Peacebuilding: The Role of Asian Development Cooperation.” 
 
The Asia Foundation Hosts Conference on the Role of NGOs and the Private Sector in Asian Development Cooperation

On November 1, the Asia Foundation hosted the international conference, “Asian Approaches to Development Cooperation: Partners in Asian Development Cooperation – The Role of the NGOs and the Private Sector” at the Lotte Hotel in Seoul, South Korea. The aim of the conference was to share ideas on development cooperation in Asia and how the public sector, the private sector and NGOs can address regional development challenges. The conference included two panels, which included members from both NGOs and the private sector. 
 
Sri Lanka and Pakistan Delegation Visits Korea for Capacity Development

From October 21 to 31, 2018, Sri Lanka and Pakistan delegation visited Korea for capacity development under the theme of Sustainable Development of Middle-income Countries: Korea’s Experience and Practices. The delegations from Sri Lanka and Pakistan learned about Korea’s experiences in economic development and shared the experience among the three countries. Also, the delegation has visited Korea International Trade Association (KITA), Seoul Start Hub, Korean Educational Development Institute, Anti-Corruption & Civil Rights Commission, Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry & Energy, Busan Port Authority, People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy (PSPD) to understand for Korea’s Economic growth and policy strategy for sustainable development in economic aspects.
 
Story and Picture Book Workshop Held for Multicultural Families

A story and picture book workshop was held for multicultural families from October 16 to November 14, 2018. Participants from Vietnam, Kazakhstan, Philippines, China, Japan, Cambodia, Mongolia, and Panama, who were selected from the 2018 All Together Children’s Book Contest, refined the story and picture books with the assistance of writer Gyungsil No and illustrator Eunsook Jo. Participants will be awarded for outstanding stories and illustrations submitted through the workshop. In addition, selected storybooks and picture books will be translated into 10 languages in the first half of 2019. The Asia Foundation, sponsored by the MoneyGram Foundation, is working with the Seoul Metropolitan Government and the Books International to produce multilingual storybooks.

Professor Eun Mee Kim is Dean of The Graduate School, Professor in the Graduate School of International Studies, Director of the Institute for Development and Human Security and Director of the Ewha Global Health Institute for Girls at Ewha Womans University.
