January 30, 2024 - The Asia Foundation launched the STEM ConnectHER program to support the career development of young women in STEM fields in Asia and the Pacific in 2024. The program includes speaker series, mentoring, industry site visits, learning resources and other various activities. In Korea, the orientation for mentees was held on January 9, 2024, followed by the first speaker series on January 15.

The speaker series, entitled "Dream Big, Fly High: Inspiring the Next Generation of STEM Leaders," featured two women experts from the Aerospace field: Ms. Ji-yeon (Julia) Park, Senior Manager at Pratt & Whitney, and Ms. Jung-beom (Judy) Moon, Connected Aviation Solutions at Collins Aerospace.

During the speaker series moderated by Lee Kyung-sook, Acting Country Representative of The Asia Foundation's Korea Office, the two speakers shared their experiences in the aerospace industry. They provided sincere advice to students and young women who are aspiring to enter aviation or STEM field.

When asked about the challenges faced as a woman in a male-dominated field and how to overcome them, Senior Manager Jiyeon (Julia) Park emphasized the importance of showcasing one's abilities and capacities. She stated, "If you demonstrate good performance, both the company and customers will notice. It is crucial not to limit yourself because of your gender."

Ms. Jeongbeom (Judy) Moon, the specialist from Collins Aerospace, mentioned, "I was a unique case. People naturally approached me because of my distinctive expertise and my records of various awards from the government". Sharing her professional journey, she highlighted the significance of specialty and uniqueness in career development.

Furthermore, both experts stressed the importance of having an attitude that challenges new fields, a mindset that does not fear changes, and the significance of having a mentor.

Throughout the speaker series, women who are pursuing career paths in STEM fields, including aviation, gained insights regarding essential attitudes and mindsets in each stage of career development. The event drew participation from 30 individuals from various countries, including Korea, Laos, Indonesia, Japan, and Thailand.
