| The relationship between Korea and The Asia Foundation started at the height of the Korean War in 1951, beginning with the delivery of paper needed to print children’s textbooks to the port of Busan. Since then the Foundation has followed South Korea’s journey in rebuilding the nation, as it transformed from being one of the poorest countries on earth to one of the richest countries by per capita income. Over the years, our influence and impact in the country has been remarkable. |

We facilitated economic and agricultural exchanges during the country’s critical reconstruction years, as well as the design of Seoul National University campus. We have been honored in supporting the education of Korea’s future leaders (including a prime minister and a foreign minister). I invite you to read “A Partner for Change: Six Decades of The Asia Foundation in Korea,” written as a labor of love by our staff and partners. With such a remarkable legacy and a track record of adapting to the times, The Asia Foundation in Korea and the Friends of The Asia Foundation Korea bring together a sense of strong responsibility as trusted partners for the future generation in the Korean Peninsula. | The Asia Foundation Selects 2019 Development Fellows |
|
| The Asia Foundation announced the 2019 class of Asia Foundation Development Fellows: Emerging Leadership for Asia’s Future following a highly competitive selection process. Representing 12 Asian countries and a wide range of disciplines, the 2019 Development Fellows—6 women and 6 men—are emerging leaders in their fields, bringing bold, innovative thinking and a deep commitment to addressing Asia’s most complex issues. The 12 fellows selected for the 2019 class are from Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia, Korea, Laos, Mongolia, Myanmar, Singapore, Sri Lanka, and Vietnam. The Development Fellows program is at the heart of The Asia Foundation’s mission, bringing exceptional individuals into a powerful network of emerging leaders working to improve lives across a dynamic and developing Asia. Now in its 6th year, the program includes 70 current and alumni Fellows across Asia, forming an active and inspirational network of the region’s most promising leaders. READ MORE |

| Asia Development Internship Program for KDI School Students at The Asia Foundation Country Offices |

| The Asia Foundation Korea Office and KDI School agreed on implementing a joint “2018/19 Asia Development Internship Program”, which provides KDI School students an internship opportunity in The Asia Foundation country offices in Asia. Reflecting internship participants’ satisfaction and continuous requests, this year’s program has been extended from 5 weeks to 2 months. The internship provides KDI School students with hands-on experience in planning and implementing development projects and enables them to be better equipped as development professionals. A total of 8 students were selected for internship in Cambodia, Laos, Mongolia, Philippines, Sri Lanka, and Malaysia. |

| Gyeonggido Family & Women Research Institute held a forum on Challenges of Building Gender-equal Business Ecosystem for Startups on 14th December 2018. The forum is to share the findings of the research on Business Environment in Gyeonggido for Women Entrepreneurship and Economic Leadership” funded by The Asia Foundation. The research was conducted to identify challenges and suggest policy directions for expanding women’s economic leadership, by analyzing core capabilities required to start a business and differences between women and men in starting and operating a business. |

| KOICA Presents The Asia Foundation with ‘Best Partnership’ Award |
|
| On December 28, the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) presented the ‘Best Partnership’ award to The Asia Foundation for the Women’s Business Center and Incubator Project in Mongolia. KOICA President Mi-kyung Lee delivered the letter of appreciation to Kwang Kim, country representative of The Asia Foundation in Korea. The Women’s Business Center project, a successful public-private partnership program, began in 2016. Since it opened in Ulaanbaatar in 2016, Mongolia’s first-ever Women’s Business Center has trained over 5,000 women and developed a regular client base of 2,000 entrepreneurs. The center supports a growing number of women business owners by providing high-quality business support services and an enabling environment for women entrepreneurs. |

| FOTAF Scholarship Award Ceremony for 65 Vietnamese Girls (5 Cohort) |
|
| Friends of The Asia Foundation Korea (FOTAF)’s Scholarship Award Ceremonies were held in Vietnam for 65 Vietnamese girls. Each ceremony was organized on November 16, 2018 at Vi Thuy district and on November 19, 2018 at Chau Thanh A district of Hau Giang Province. During the ceremony, a laptop was donated for the disabled scholar who wishes to major in information technology at the university. FOTAF has supported disadvantaged high school girls in Vietnam since 2009. Total 283 students were benefited from the scholarship program. For the fifth cohort (2018-2020), 65 scholars will be sponsored for 2 years. |

| FOTAF Chairman Moon Kook-Hyun is the CEO of New Paradigm Institute & CEO of Hansoll Textile Ltd. He is a former member of the National Assembly, and the former Chief Executive Officer of Yuhan-Kimberly, Limited, which is a 70:30 joint venture company between Kimberly-Clark Corporation and Yuhan Corporation in Korea. |

| KDI-TAF's AADC Publication 'Shifting to Planned Urbanization in Asia' Released |
|
| Given the expansion and diversification of Asian led south south cooperation, this volume focuses on Asian lessons and partnerships addressing the region’s urbanization challenges, in the context of the New Urban Agenda (NUA) and Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This volume captures participant experiences and presents the best practices that have emerged as their cities, countries, and organizations have partnered to plan and manage Asia’s urbanization. |
