2019 Asia Foundation Development Fellows Meet in Korea and Indonesia

The Asia Foundation welcomes the 2019 class of Asia Foundation Development Fellows coming together for the first time as a community of young changemakers for a Leadership Training Program in Seoul, in partnership with KDI School of Public Policy & Management. The 2019 cohort was greeted by the Foundation’s president David Arnold, and received a surprise visit from the former UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. The 2019 Asia Foundation Development Fellows will continue on to Indonesia later in April for an applied workshop on Asian Development, where development challenges and innovations will serve as a contextual backdrop for applying concepts in international development. Friends of The Asia Foundation Korea (FOTAF) Welcomes 2019 Asia Foundation Development Fellows 

On April 15, Friends of The Asia Foundation Korea (FOTAF) met 2019 Asia Foundation Development Fellows at the Plaza Hotel. FOTAF Board Lee Hong-Koo (Chairman of the Seoul Forum for International Affairs), Moon Kook-Hyun (CEO of New Paradigm Institute & Hansoll Textile Ltd.), Kim Jin-Hyun (Chairman of World Peace Forum), Park Jin (Chairman of Korean-American Association; President of Asia Future Institute) welcomed 12 development fellows. Facilitated by FOTAF Board Park Jin, development fellows asked questions to the Korean leaders in a wide range of topics related to diplomacy, environment, and media. 
 
Let’s Read Dismantles Barriers to Literacy by Uniting Technology and Local Communities in Asia’s Free Digital Library for Children

The Asia Foundation unveiled Let’s Read, Asia’s free digital library for children, a locally-driven solution to book scarcity in Asia. The gap between privileged and disadvantaged children is wider than ever. But Let’s Read is built on the power of The Book Effect: despite all we know about privilege, a child’s passion for reading is more predictive of their academic success than their family’s socioeconomic status. Let’s Read brings together the power of technology with local authors, illustrators, publishers, and translators to dismantle barriers to accessing local language books. A lack of access to these resources has prevented millions from reading and learning. Read More
 
The Asia Foundation’s 2019 Lotus Leadership Awards in New York to Honor Christiane Amanpour and SafetiPin

The Lotus Leadership Awards recognize outstanding individuals and organizations that have made major contributions to the well-being of women and their communities in Asia. The Awards are hosted annually by The Asia Foundation’s Lotus Circle, a group of committed individuals, foundations, and corporations who are advancing the rights and opportunities of women in Asia through their support of The Asia Foundation’s Women’s Empowerment Program. In the 2019 Lotus Leadership Awards Gala held on April 3, award-winning journalist Christiane Amanpour was honored for her extraordinary leadership in raising the voices and stories of women worldwide. The Foundation also recognized SafetiPin, a social enterprise harnessing the power of data and technology to make Asian cities safer for women. Learn more about the Lotus Circle.
