Northeast Asia Youth Exchange:
Fostering Climate Solutions through Collaborative Learning |

In August 2023, The Asia Foundation launched the Northeast Asia Youth Exchange Program that aimed to tackle climate change through Nature-Based Solutions (NbS). The program brought together 13 dedicated young individuals from China, Japan, Mongolia, and South Korea aged 18-30, who are known for their innovative efforts in addressing climate change challenges. Through a blend of informative webinars, immersive site visits to Mongolia, and collaborative project development, program participants emerged not only with an enriched understanding of climate change but also with concrete plans to make a difference in their home countries and the wider region.

Re-unification Re-Startup 2023:
Spotlighting North Korean Refugee Entrepreneurs

The Asia Foundation co-hosted the "Re-unification Re-Startup 2023" to spotlight the endeavors of North Korean refugee entrepreneurs, showcasing their businesses and products to the broader public on November 18, 2023. The event consisted of a talk concert and a product showcase. The talk concert featured seven selected North Korean refugee entrepreneurs who shared their remarkable journeys, detailing the challenges they faced entering the South Korean market and adapting to its society through entrepreneurship.
Meanwhile, the product showcase provided 11 North Korean refugee entrepreneurs with an opportunity to test the market competitiveness of their products and promote them to the public.

the Korea-Japan Seminar on Professional Women in STEM

On October 11, 2023, The Asia Foundation and the Korea Foundation for Women in Science, Engineering, and Technology (WISET) co-hosted a seminar titled “The Korea-Japan Seminar: Growing as Women Leaders in STEM Fields,” which was organized by the Research Institute of Asian Women, Sookmyung Women’s University. The seminar featured women experts from various STEM fields from Korea and Japan as speakers.
They presented and discussed their experiences and know-how in working in the fields and provided practical advice. The speakers emphasized the necessity of expanding mentorship opportunities for women and reducing the promotion gap resulting from marriage and childbearing and rearing for female professionals in STEM. The seminar contributed to expanding the opportunity for students to interact with female experts in STEM areas and learn about their careers.

Ensuring Continued Efforts to Combat Trafficking in Persons
for Sexual Exploitation and Gender-Based Violence in Mongolia

|
On November 7, 2023, a project closing conference was held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, to report and share the outcome and achievements of the five-year ODA project funded by the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family of the Republic of Korea. The conference was attended by 81 people representing government and non-government organizations, partners, and project participants.
During the conference, discussions focused on ways to strengthen sustainability and multi-stakeholder cooperation to prevent violence against women and support victims. Since 2020, The Asia Foundation has closely worked with the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection and the Mongolian Gender Equality Center to prevent violence against women and support social and economic rehabilitation for survivors. This project helped increase public awareness of gender-based violence and enhance women's rights in Mongolia.

STEM ConnectHER 2024 Speaker Series
Dream Big, Fly High: Inspiring the Next Generation of Stem Leaders

The Asia Foundation’s STEM ConnectHer program, a pan-regional network of networks to connect and support the next generation of women in STEM, was launched in Korea in 2024. Following the orientation for Korean mentees on January 9, 2024, the first webinar, “Dream Big, Fly High: Inspiring the Next Generation of STEM Leaders”, was organized on January 15, 2024.
Moderated by Kyung-sook Lee, Acting Country Representative of The Asia Foundation Korea, the event featured two women experts in the Aerospace field: Ms. Park Jiyeon (Julia), Senior Manager at Pratt & Whitney, and Ms. Moon Jung Bum (Judy), Connected Aviation Solutions at Collins Aerospace. The speakers emphasized the importance of personal capacity, which is not limited to gender, the recognition of expertise from various sectors, and the significance of mentorship. The event garnered regional interest, with 30 attendees from various Asian countries, including Korea, Indonesia, Japan, Laos, and Thailand.

APAC Cybersecurity Fund
|

Google.org, Google’s philanthropic arm, is providing $15M to The Asia Foundation to launch the APAC Cybersecurity Fund in partnership with CyberPeace Institute and Global Cyber Alliance to bolster cyber capabilities of 300,000 underserved micro and small businesses, nonprofits, and social enterprises. Working with implementing organizations and universities across the region, The Asia Foundation aims to equip local communities and students via upskilling tools and cyber clinics to protect against online risks. The initiative will span 13 locations, including Bangladesh, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.

The Asia Foundation Announces 2024 Development Fellows

The Asia Foundation announces the 2024 class of Asia Foundation Development Fellows: Emerging Leadership for Asia’s Future following a highly competitive selection process with thousands of applicants. The 12 selected Development Fellows are emerging leaders in their fields, bringing bold, innovative thinking and a deep commitment to addressing complex issues across Asia and the Pacific. Ms. Minseo Ju, director of the Ulsan International Development Cooperation Center, was selected from Korea as a 2024 Asia Foundation Development Fellow.

What a Clean Energy Future Demands: A Massive Shift in Critical Minerals and Global Supply Chains
A new report, "What a Clean Energy Future Demands: Massive Shift in Global Supply Chains and Critical Materials,” was published. The report's findings and recommendations are brought from the second Republic of Korea–Australia–United States trilateral dialogue held on June 7 and 8, 2023. After the report was released, a virtual report launch event was held on September 28, 2023, with three country experts to discuss the policy recommendations on how trilateral cooperation can help build scalable, sustainable, and secure supply chains needed to tackle one of today’s most significant global challenges.
